I CAN Prevent Diabetes: Cultural Adaptation

I CAN Prevent Diabetes (ICANPD) is a research-based, national program for people with prediabetes. The lifestyle changes practiced in the year-long course can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes, with potential for a dramatic positive impact on participants’ long-term health. To adapt ICANPD, I have worked with SNAP-Ed Educators, university faculty, community leaders of rural Somali and Latino communities in Minnesota, to adapt and implement culturally-responsive program content of the I CANPD curriculum. I traveled to these communities in Worthington, MN and Willmar, MN to interview participatns, community leaders and partners, partnering clinics and religious organizations to inform the cultural adaptations that will reduce waste, with user-insight driven design.
