Logo: The Shulgin Archive

The Shulgin Archive is a global-access digital library of Alexander “Sasha” Shulgin and his wife Ann Shulgin’s extensive research materials on psychedelics. Since the research was in chemistry, particularly organic chemistry, the hexagon shape was an obvious choice as it references a carbon atom. The initials, “S” and “A”, stand for Shulgin Archive and also Sasha and Ann. I chose a font that had an S and an A that mirrored each other a bit and doctored them to be symmetrical. The effect, with the addition of warm pink and earthy brown, is rounded and feminine, to evoke an emotional tie between the letters. There’s an enormous amount of love for the Shulgins and they had tremendous love for each other. I gave the logo just a hint of a heart shape to suggest that. Melitta, who commissioned the logo, choked up when I presented the final version to her.
